The long-term future of a Crawford County volunteer fire department is uncertain because of serious financial problems. The Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department has been protecting the township since the late 1930's. But it's financial problems are now making it tough to make ends meet. The main problem is the department's key source of revenue, an aging social hall. The kitchen can't be used, and the entire structure is gradually falling apart. The department thought the problem was solved about 10 years ago with the construction of a new social hall nearby. But a deed restriction prevents the sale of alcohol so the hall was never opened. A site has now been found for a new complex but that takes money the department doesn't have. So unless the situation charges, the future is unclear. Department President Christopher Reichel said, "We've been here for 70 years. I want to say we will be here for another 70 years. But i also have to say we are at rock bottom right now." Department Trustee Tom Furry said, "It is to the point we cannot buy the equipment we need. We can't get the training we need." Members say they have tried to get help from both the state and federal governments. But so far their requests for help have not led to any new funding.
